In the FIAT 125 Special, which was subsequently submitted in 1968, a different carburetor provided even more pepper: 100 HP from an identical capacity were good enough for an acceleration of about 11.2 seconds from zero to hundred and a top speed of 170 km/h - values, that still a few years before had been stricly reserved to real sports cars.

Fiat was ahead of the curve with the 125, as it imbued its family car with a sporty personality. For its entire run, the only power offered in the 125 was a 1.6-liter DOHC inline-four. Initially the model used a four-speed manual, but a five-speed joined the lineup very quickly. For the less sporting, there was a three-speed automatic.

The Fiat 125 is a large family car manufactured and marketed by Italian company Fiat from 1967 to 1972. Derivatives were built under license outside Italy until the 1990s. As launched the car was unusual in blending saloon car passenger accommodation with sports car performance, a combination which would be more widely adopted by the European volume auto-makers in the decade ahead.

Finding themselves in a Mediterranean pickle, management gave engineer Dante Giacosa a scant 18 months to develop an interim model, the 125. Good thing Fiat counted with multiple models, for Giacosa had lots of bits to play with to assemble the 125. The chassis and floor pan of the 1300/1500 were carried over with some mods, while the 124's.

The Fiat 125 was an interesting mid-sized saloon that drove much better than its unpromising styling might lead you to believe. It was a rebody of the outgoing 1300 and 1500 saloon - with its floorpan being carried over almost unchanged. And the body was a slightly lengthened revision of the Fiat 124, with the door being shared between both.
